SCIS (Science Curriculum Improvement Study) Kit SCIS Kits can be checked out for 18 weeks. Grades 1-3.
MATERIAL OBJECTS (SCIIS-SCIENCE CURRICULUM IMPROVEMENT STUDY-KIT)…emphasizes object, property, material, serial ordering, evidence. Students handle, observe and describe objects. They learn that objects are composed of materials and have properties: solids, liquids, and gases. They gain an awareness of “conservation of matter.” (Grade 1) INTERACTION AND SYSTEMS (SCIIS-SCIENCE CURRICULUM IMPROVEMENT STUDY-KIT)…emphasizes interaction, system, evidence of interaction, interaction at a distance. Evidence that an interaction has taken place comes from the observed change in the system. The students investigate gear/pulley systems, chemical systems, magnetic systems and electric circuits to observe and interpret evidence of interaction. (Grade 2)
POPULATIONS (SCIIS-SCIENCE CURRICULUM IMPROVEMENT STUDY-KIT)…emphasizes population, plant-eater, food web, biotic potential, animal-eater, plant/animal eater, predator/prey. Students build, maintain and observe terrariums and aquariums in order to investigate the interactions of populations e.g. foods webs in each system. (Grade 3) SUBSYSTEMS AND VARIABLES (SCIIS-SCIENCE CURRICULUM IMPROVEMENT STUDY-KIT)…emphasizes subsystem, solution, evaporation, histogram, and variable. Students work with solid and liquid materials to extend their understanding of the subsystem concept. Histograms are used to record and interpret data collected by the students. (Grade 3) |
