| Metronet Information Literacy Project |  | In its second year, the SPPS Metronet Information Literacy Project is a collaborative effort between Saint Paul Public Schools and Metronet, to implement the Minnesota Educational Media Organization Information and Technology Literacy Standards. Library media specialists and teacher teams from each of the seven high schools will meet regularly throughout the school year as they work together to incorporate the Research Process, use of Reliable Resources and Responsible Use of Information and Technology into their instruction. Accomplished with funding from Metronet, the project will focus on SPPS
10th grade students and will include Metro State University and the
Saint Paul Public Libraries as project partners.
Participant Goals
Research
Improve
the ability of students and teachers to conduct effective research by
using a process that includes the following 5 steps:
- Formulate a Question
- Gather and Evaluate information
- Conclude (form c conclusion)
- Communicate information and conclusion
- Evaluate process and product
Use Reliable Resources
All
participants will identify and use available, reliable resources whenever possible. This includes but is not limited to, electronic,
human, and print. Collaboration will be encouraged at all levels.
Responsible Use
Promote
understanding and practice responsible use of information and
technology. Advise and assist teachers in the creation of
plagiarism-proof assignments. Help all involved to approach ethical use
in the spirit of good
citizenship rather than compliance.
Project Goals
The Metronet Information Literacy Project (MILP) goals are:
- Improve the ability of participating 10th graders to conduct research by teaching them a process which involves the following five steps:
- Question
- Gather and Evaluate
- Conclude
- Communicate
- Evaluate
- Increase students’ understanding of the legal and ethical issues related to information use including plagiarism, copyright, and the responsible use of technology.
- Foster greater library media specialist-teacher collaboration and teamwork and promote the implementation of the MEMO/MLA “Recommended Standards for Information and Technology Literacy.”
- Demonstrate and stimulate increased levels of interlibrary cooperation among the types of libraries participating in this project: school library media centers, public libraries, and academic libraries.
