New Teacher Laptop Initative 2008-2009
Program Goals:
Saint Paul Public School’s Technology Integration Initiative continues its endeavor to ensure that all SPPS staff have the necessary skills to live and work in the 21st Century. The Initiative accomplishes this by providing teachers with equal parts training, access to hardware and software, and coaching to maximize the effective use of educational technology.
This initiative supports the work of the Saint Paul Public School’s Professional development model by providing coaching and mentoring support to new teachers on the use of technology in their jobs.

Specifically this initiative has the following goals:
  • Increase teacher/staff skills and competency with computers and technology.
  • Promote increased use of district technology resources for collaboration, learning and efficiency
  • Increase use of online-learning and training for staff
  • Attend workshops to learn new ways to take advantage of technology tools and resources to become more effective and more efficient.
  • Expand the use of technology in your classroom using a laptop computer.
  • Further develop your skills in integrating technology into teaching and learning with the help of workshops and coaches.

Participant Eligibility:

All full-time, Classroom teachers starting employment in Saint Paul Public Schools in Fall 2008 are eligible.  Limited space.

Participants Will Receive:
Participants accepted into the Laptop Initiative will receive use of a wireless computer with software. Participants may keep this hardware and software package as long as they continue to meet the requirements of the Initiative. If a participant leaves the district, or elects to no longer participate in the initiative requirements, the equipment must be returned in working order.

Participants will attend 11 hours of formal training and receive on-going coaching support on best practice use to integrate technology.

Workshop Requirements:
Attend all required Laptop Initiative training (specific dates and times will be available in PDExpress):
  • Workshop I: Orientation (by Sept. 30th, 3 hours)
  • Workshop II: Choice of Topics (by November 1st, 2 hours)
  • Workshop III: Choice of Topics (by February 15th, 2 hours)
  • Online Class: (by May 30th, 2 hours)

Specific Requirements:Meet with your Technology coach twice by the end of the 08-09 school year.
  • Meet with your Technology coach twice by the end of the 08-09 school year.
  • Expand the use of technology in classroom setting, using a computer to demonstrate student learning.
  • Create and maintain your Urban Planet web page. If you haven't started your Urban Planet web page you will need to do this by October 24, 2008.
  • Maintain possession of Initiative hardware. Equipment is checked out to trained participants only.  Giving away or loaning Initiative hardware is not allowed.
  • Read and respond to Technology Integration Initiative emails.
  • Complete year-end Technology Integration Initiative assessment, describing integration technology efforts and  the impact on teaching and learning

Coach Support:
Technology Integration Services, based at 1930 Como, provides technology integration support for all SPPS schools. The department can assist in the following ways:
  • Curriculum integration/planning support
  • Direct classroom instruction support
  • On-site integration training
  • Building level technical planning

Electronic Resources:
The Educational Technology Department purchases a number of electronic resources that are available to staff, students and parents. These on-line encyclopedias, electronic reference libraries, digital video and training tools can be accessed at:
