Technology Integration Lesson Idea

Title: Tesselations

Subject:Math

Grade Level(s): Grade 5 , Everyday Math lesson _______

Project Description: Students create tessellations using AppleWorks Painting.

Learner Outcomes: Students will show proficiency with the terms described in this math unit (flip, slide, turn,)

Tools and Resources:AppleWorks.

Tech Tips: Create a starting point – a painting document with a single colored square (see templates below). Save this as a template so students can always get back to this starting point as they work to create their tessellations. Use the videos below to demonstrate to students.

Here’s How: To begin, students start with the open template of the solid square. Using the Lasso tool, students start to make their cuts. The cut has to connect back to the start. When done with the “cut” you’ll see the “marching ants” telling you the area is selected. Drag the selected area away from the rest of the shape. Use the Paint Bucket tool to change color selecting a different color from the color palette. Select the newly colored piece with the Magic Wand tool and drag it into place. Creat another piece by going Edit > Paste.
