Online Learning Resources


The Online Learning Resource Page provides links to Web Resources geared to give students and educators an efficient way to research online. The red links are annual subscriptions to Educational Resources provided by the Educational Technology Department. The blue links are provided by state funding. The others are educational links that merit a look also.


  ABC CLIO   High School only - Social Studies resources that not only provide information about history, but also guide students through the research process. Sites include American History, World History: Ancient and Medieval Eras, and World History: The Modern Era.
 Atomic Learning   The "How to's" for a variety of computer software applications presented via QuickTime Movies. Learn how to set your tabs in AppleWorks 6, add linked ideas to Kidspiration or create Internet lesson plans. This site continually adds tutorials to help you learn new technologies.Web connection works best using Firefox Browser.
 Ethnic Newswatch   Full-text searchable articles taken from ethnic, minority and native press newspapers, magazines and journals. Ethnic NewsWatch offers a different viewpoint from the mainstream press. The database can also be viewed in Spanish.
 Gale Virtual Reference Library (eBooks)   A database of encyclopedias, almanacs and specialized reference sources for high school level research.
 Grolier Online   Seven online encyclopedias and reference resources. Grolier Online includes an encyclopedia in the Spanish language.
 SIRS Discoverer   Contains articles and graphics from 1,400+ magazines, newspapers and U.S. government documents. The topics have been selected to easily integrate into classroom activities. Grades K-9.
 SIRS Researcher   Do a quick and easy search for anything from Environmental topics such as Tornado Protection to Business topics such as Jobs in an Evolving Economy. You will find searchable full-text articles, a dictionary and a Thesaurus. Grades 7 - 12
 Science Resource Center   Created especially for Middle Schools, this Science resource site has topical lists to assist 6-8 grade students in their Science research.
  TeachingBooks.net   Ever wondered what inspired an author to write his/her book? Would you like to listen to an audio clip of a book before you check it out from the library? TeachingBooks.net introduces you to authors and illustrators through short movies and interviews. You can listen to books read by authors and also links are provided to the author's and illustrator's personal websites for further research.
 United Streaming   A digital video-on-demand service brought to you by Discovery Education. Find out what 43,000 schools and over 20,000,000 students and teachers already know—unitedstreaming works!
 EBSCO databases   Databases include Academic Search Premier, Business Source Premier, MasterFILE Premier and Regional Business News
 Gale Group   Provided by ELM, this group of databases includes full-text magazine and newspaper articles for students of all ages. Also includes databases of Spanish-language materials. The Professional Collection database has full text periodicals with professional development in mind.
 MN Reflections   a collection of over 10,000 images and documents to be used for research and education.
 ProQuest Newspapers   Databases on world-wide topics presented in full text or abstract format.
 Star Tribune Newpaper   Local Minnesota newspaper
 African American Registry   A calendar-based series of accomplishments achieved by Black Americans in history. This registry includes audio and video clips, links to poetry and lyrics of the Black culture and 12 category links.
 Book Share   Enables the visually impaired community to download books, magazines and newspapers in a format to use with common Braille or synthetic voice reading devices for a minimal annual subscription fee.
 CNN Student News   Educators can use this resource in their classrooms for the news of the day. It is easy to integrate into any lesson.
 Discovery Channel School   Teaching tools, customizing a classroom, homework helpers and a Curriculum Center are a few of the sections offered on this Discovery Channel web resource. Also check out the Brain Boosters and Puzzlemaker.
 Great Web Sites for Kids   Includes links to resource sites divided by subject areas from Animals to Social Sciences. Created by the Am. Library Assoc.
 Internet Public Library   The Reading Room has books, magazines and newspapers. You could chose to read an Aesop's Fables online and follow a lesson plan provided. Students can select the KidSpace section and research Orcas or take a virtual trip to Africa or the Far East.
 Librarians' Index to the Internet   Search a directory of links in topics ranging from Arts & Humanities to Sports and Recreation. The "New This Week" link provides information on national and international current events.
 Library of Congress   A repository of words, pictures and & sound. Sections for kids & families, special needs visitors and researchers. Teachers have a "Learning Page" with lesson plans, activities and professional development. Search by index, site map or ask a librarian.
 Minnesota Department of Education   Learn about Educational Programs, data and report topics such as professional licensing and education finance or the latest news coming from this department.
 NCREL - North Central Regional Educational Laboratory   A non-profit organization dedicated to helping schools and students reach their full potential.
 Smithsonian Education   The gateway to Smithsonian educational resources
 TIES Web Site   Includes directory of computer application classes presented by TIES and information about their conferences.
